The Saddest Thing in Life is Wasted Talent

The saddest thing in life is wasted talent,
and the choices that you make will shape your life forever.
(-a Bronx Tale)

Maybe I'm getting old, but I feel like movies, television and music just are not the same anymore.  I remember being a kid and I felt like I learned major life lessons by some of these inspirational characters, songs and memorable monologues.  I miss the 80's and 90's movies that offered us humor and ridiculous action with thoughtful messages.

A Bronx tale will always be one of my top ten favorite movies of all time though.  Half because I'll always remember my dad introducing it to me as a kid and I like to fondly remember those days, but also because its such a quality flick.  They just don't make 'em like that, geeze- now I really sound old.  But whatever, anyway its a classic coming of story that is also a period piece to the 60's, with a new york mob backdrop. It touches on some of the most important values and is a hard core classic movie.

If you've never got around to watching it because its long, just man up and get on that. If you've never wanted to because its old, get over that too- it only came out in 1993.  Lastly if you've never heard of it read this and I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the movie. (Sonny gives C advice on finding a good woman, the famous door test.)

T h e   D o o r   T e s t :

"Alright, listen to me. You pull up right where she lives, right? Before you get outta the car, you lock both doors. Then, get outta the car, you walk over to her. You bring her over to the car. Dig out the key, put it in the lock and open the door for her. Then you let her get in. Then you close the door. Then you walk around the back of the car and look through the rear window. If she doesn't reach over and lift up that button so that you can get in: dump her.

"Just like that?"

"Listen to me, kid. If she doesn't reach over and lift up that button so that you can get in, that means she's a selfish broad and all you're seeing is the tip of the iceberg. You dump her and you dump her fast."

The movie was Robert DeNiro's directorial debut, a Bronx Tale was originally written as a play based on Chazz Palminteri's life.  A few years back I heard the production was on broadway, unfortunately I found out a month too late.  I missed it. Needless to say, when I heard it was coming to the Paramount in Huntington (one of my favorite venues), I was ecstatic.  I needed to go and I made sure I got good tickets.
A Hendricks on the rocks and my favorite person, I was amped for an awesome evening.  Chazz as the one man show was incredible, truly an experience to remember. Anyone who ever loved the movie should go see it as it was originally written, as a play.
